How to tie a Windsor knot

A Windsor knot is a thick, wide and triangular knot that is ideal for formal and important occasions. It is best for wide collared shirts and a lot easier to do than most people think.

  1. Drape the tie around your neck, with the wide side on the right, about 30 cm below the narrow end of the tie.
  2. Cross the wide side over the narrow side.
  3. Bring the wide end up through the loop between your collar and tie.
  4. Pull the wide end down toward the front.
  5. Pull the wide end behind the narrow end and to the right, back through the loop and to the right again so that the wide end is inside out.
  6. Bring the wide end across the front from right to left.
  7. Bring the wide end through the loop again.
  8. Pull the wide end down through the knot in front.
  9. Tighten the knot.
  10. Use one hand to pull the narrow end down gently and use the other hand to move the knot up until it reaches the centre of the collar.
